What to wear - Family Edition

Hey friends! It seems like this is the most popular subject when it comes to having a family portrait taken. Not knowing what to wear! Don’t sweat it - I’m here to help guide you through the process. But first, lets talk about a couple of things to get us started.

Location

First we need to decide where our session is taking place. I’m going to use a field as an example for this post. What do you think of? I think of earthy tones. Earthy tones would be a very muted palette (think tans & browns). With a palette such as that, you would want to stand out just a little pop of color, but keep with the same tones.

Do you see how all of the colors are in harmony with one another? That is step number one to planning out your outfits. With the colors in mind for your session, you don’t want to match but, compliment one another.

Solid colors always photograph well. There’s no risk of distracting from faces, joyful interactions or even the beautiful scenery.

  • For women, look for flow, natural soft fabrics that drape. These make for beautiful portraits and give a sense of motion.

  • Limit distracting patterns and large logos. When in doubt select one patterned outfit for a single person in the family and then pull colors from that pattern to dress everyone else in solid colors to coordinate.

  • Layers are your friend – adding a light sweater or loose top can never go wrong. Think tights, cardigans, blazers, jewelry, and/or scarves. Accessories can take an average outfit and make it feel more complete and create visual interest and movement in your photos, and really help the images stand apart.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothes you can move in. If your dress gets suddenly too short when you bend over, or your pants are too tight to sit down in, opt for more breathable pieces. Be prepared to move! Photos are taken from many different angles. Yours shoes don’t need to be the best or brand new, but make sure they are clean and in good appearance.

so where can i find an outfit for everyone?

Good question? My first thought is to just raid your closet. 9/10 times you have a favorite outfit in there that you know you are comfortable and confident in. Those two things are important when getting dressed for your session! If you can’t find anything, I’d suggest a complete look from Old Navy (which I honestly forget about when I am shopping). They have clothing for literally - the whole family!

If Old Navy is not your jam, I’ve put a crap load of time putting together outfits on Amazon. I will link some of my favorites below.

If you are still reading this…

Remember, these photos are about you, your family, and the love and connection you share! Having great outfits is the icing on the cake! If you feel comfortable and confident about how you look, you are much more likely to love your photos. I share all of this advice because I want your outfits to compliment and help make the photo, not detract from it.
